4 Situations Where You Need Emergency HVAC Service

You need your furnace to run as efficiently as possible; however, even with routine servicing there are things that may go wrong and require the assistance of an emergency HVAC technician. Here are four reasons to call in your local HVAC experts for emergency heating repairs rather than waiting until regular business hours.

Your Furnace Doesn't Turn On

If your furnace fails to turn on, takes longer than usual to turn on, or turns on but doesn't stay turned on, there are several issues that could be causing this problem. For example, the pilot light may not be working correctly or there could be faulty wiring.

Either of these problems can cause additional significant damage to the furnace, so it is important to contact an HVAC repair technician for emergency services to prevent the problem from getting worse.

A Family Member's Health Is at Stake

Elderly family members, children and anyone in the house who's sick may not be able to endure a lengthy period of time without heat. If the furnace suddenly turns off or if you cannot get it to turn on, check to make sure the circuit didn't flip and the thermostat is set correctly. If neither of these is the problem, contact an emergency HVAC technician right away, and let them know that someone in your home may not be able to handle a long wait without heat.

Your Furnace Is Making Strange Sounds

A furnace generally makes some type of noise when it is running; however, if you notice unusual sounds - such as banging, groaning or whining coming from your furnace, you should contact an emergency HVAC technician. These types of noises may indicate a broken part or a loose belt, which may cause more damage if not repaired quickly.

You Smell Gas in Your Home

When there is a residential gas leak, you will smell an unusual odor, such as sulfur or rotten eggs. If this occurs, shut off your main gas line and immediately contact an emergency HVAC technician. You should also routinely check the pilot light. The flame should be blue. If it is yellow, it may be a carbon monoxide leak, and you should have it repaired immediately.

Ways to Stay Warm While Waiting for the Technician to Arrive

As soon as you call your local emergency HVAC team, they will send someone to service your call. While you are waiting for them to drive to your home, here are a few things you can do to stay warm until they arrive:
  • Choose a room on the warmest side of your house, one that is away from cold winds. It's also best to avoid rooms with large windows; an interior bathroom typically has the lowest air leakage and heat loss.
  • Isolate the room from the rest of the house by keeping the doors closed and hanging a quilt or blanket over the entryways.Layer with blankets. In fact, your bed may be the safest, warmest place for a short period. This is an especially good way to keep children and the elderly warm. Two or more people in the same bed will help to conserve body heat.

Keep in mind that when the weather is especially cold, delaying heating repairs may be dangerous for your health. It is much safer to contact an emergency HVAC technician than to risk harm to your family. It's also best to request emergency services if you suspect that running the furnace may cause further damage.

If your home's heating system breaks down in the middle of a cold winter day (or night), contact your local emergency HVAC company immediately. Modern Heating & Cooling, Inc., has emergency technicians available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to make sure you stay comfortable and warm all winter long.

I never knew that odd sounds coming from the unit can already mean that there is a broken part inside the system. So, like you said, it would be best to contact an emergency HVAC technician immediately when this happens. I guess I need to tell my sister to call one first thing in the morning tomorrow because I have been hearing rumbling sounds in the unit right now. Actually, I am staying for one night today at their house because it's her birthday tomorrow. Thanks for the information!

Thanks for the information that if your furnace makes strange noises that are different from the normal sound, like a banging, groaning, or whining, then you need to contact an emergency HVAC technician. My furnace has been making a weird low grumble sound which I guess you could say sounds similar to groaning when it's turned on. I'll have to look an HVAC contractor to come look at my furnace and air conditioning unit to see what the problem may be and fix it before any more damage is caused to either of them.

I'm grateful for your advice that if the furnace is having an issue if we turn it on, an immediate action should take place. This is actually the problem with our unit. Since Monday night it failed to turn on every time we tried to do so.

I really appreciate your tip to check for any carbon monoxide poisoning that may be present in your house if you smell gas! My sister recently moved into an old house, and she is worried that there might be a gas leak. I will be sure to tell my sister that she should see if she smells gas in her house!

Thank you for the list of when to call an HVAC contractor for an emergency unit repair. I didn't realize that if your pilot light turns yellow, you might have a carbon monoxide leak. We'll make sure that we keep an eye on the pilot light so we know if we need to contact a repair service.

Thanks for pointing out that we should call a technician as soon as possible when the house reeks of gas. It also helped when you said that we should turn off the gas line. I will keep this in mind to keep the people safe in our property. I just need to learn about this information because there is a time when I smelled a gas scent for a short while, but the people around me did not. However, I guess I still need to get it checked just to be sure.

The furnace sounds one is hard for most.. People will let appliances slowly deteriorate until they are in full blown panic mode. We have a tendency to withstand small issues, and watch as they escalate..

Winter is coming up where I live. I didn't know that if your furnace takes a little longer to turn on there could be an issue. My fireplaces does this sometimes. I think I might get it checked before winter and the furnace becomes necessary.

Your advice to contact an HVAC repair technician if you notice any problems so you can prevent the issue from getting worse would be important in an emergency. When choosing a technician, it would probably be a good idea to find one that is local and specializes in the emergency services you require, such as furnace or AC repairs. Finding one that is local could ensure they're able to get to you quickly to provide the necessary services to fix your system.

Thanks for helping me understand that we should contact a technician when we the furnace suddenly shuts down and the first things to do did not change the situation. I guess I would have to hire one tomorrow because we tried those, and the furnace still wasn't working. Now, we have to book a hotel room so that we don't freeze when we sleep due to having no furnace for the night.

I thought it was great that you said to call for an HVAC service if your furnace doesn't turn on or takes longer to turn on than usual. My father is renovating his house to raise its value, and he has been wanting to ensure his heating and air conditioning is working. It may be beneficial for him to hire a company that provides heating services to make sure his furnace is in good repair.

Thanks for explaining that we can stay warm by isolating the cold room from the rest of the house with closed doors and blankets. My husband and I have noticed our furnace's air is barely warm at all when it comes out. I'm glad I read your article because I think it will help us stay warm as we look for an HVAC repair company.

I agree that you should definitely shut off your main gas line if you smell it. Gas is deadly and if you don't act immediately, that could end in disaster. I personally have a carbon monoxide detector just in case.

I hadn't thought about how routine servicing doesn't mean that your heating won't have problems, and when it does you'll need emergency services. Our heater is getting pretty old, so I'm not sure if something will go wrong soon. I'll have to look into heating services.

Although unlicensed HVAC contractors appear to work cheaper than a bonded, insured and licensed air conditioning companies, the long-term risks may not match the promise. The problems are simple yet complex. When homeowners hire HVAC service work from questionable contractors

Your heating and air condition is very important to your home. In order to make sure that it is always functioning properly and prevent situations where you are in need of an emergency fix, you need to have that system serviced on a regular basis. If you do business with a heating and air conditioning company that offers the best service in the area, you won't have to worry when something happens that is beyond your control. Keep in mind that a good company is available 24/7. If you ever find yourself in trouble and in need of a quick fix, you can contact that company for service right away.

When there are problems with your HVAC system, you need to get them taken care of right away. You don't want to put off getting any repairs because they can interfere with the integrity of the whole system and make your home very uncomfortable. This is why you need to make sure that any heating and air conditioning company you hire has all of the proper credentials and the right reputation. That way you know that they can fix any problems you may have and prevent new ones from occurring.
